Well, in Christianity, 1/3 of the angels rebelled, so 1/3 are evil. In Islam, Lucifer and his devils are not angels, but genies. Lucifer was allowed into God's court because he was so cool, but he betrayed God because he disagreed with the creation of humanity. The angels, did, as well, but without free will, they could not. In Gnosticism, angels are emanations of higher deity, and those under the command of the Demiurge, the creator of the mystical world are hostile to mankind and any attempts to ascend towards the Pleroma. So it depends on the religion, really. Personally, I think it's all hogwash. Interesting, but hogwash, regardless.
